I was looking to read a beautiful book about Christmas when I realised that there are hundreds of books out there and it is tough to make a choice. So I made myself a list: Christmas Books for Every Genre. It includes all the (suitable) genres I can think of. They are all about Christmas and one of the best in their genres.

It was so fun to create Christmas books for every genre; I’ve learned that I have to read more about Christmas and bake Christmas cookies on the side. I’m ready for all the Christmas fun, and all the books from every genre, and I know what I’ll be gifting to my friends and family. Do you see any favourites among Christmas Books for Every Genre?

The Night Before Christmas by Nikolai Gogol
Written in 1831, this dark tale relates the adventures of Vakula, the blacksmith, in his fight against the devil, who has stolen the moon above the village of Dikanka and is wreaking havoc on its inhabitants, all to win the love of the most beautiful girl in town. The basis for many film and opera adaptations, and so still a story traditionally read aloud to children on Christmas Eve in Ukraine and Russia, The Night Before Christmas is the best holiday tale by the man whom Vladimir Nabokov called ‘the greatest writer Russia has yet produced’. A classic among Christmas Books for Every Genre.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Ebenezer Scrooge is unimpressed by Christmas. He has no time for festivities or goodwill toward his fellow men and is only interested in money. Then, on the night of Christmas Eve, his life is changed by a series of ghostly visitations that show him some bitter truths about his choices. A Christmas Carol is Dickens’ most influential book and a funny, clever and so hugely enjoyable story. A classic among Christmas Books for Every Genre.

The Nutcracker by E.T.A. Hoffmann
On Christmas Eve, Fritz and Marie excitedly await the arrival of Godfather Drosselmeier and the marvellous gifts he brings for them every year. When Marie discovers a curious nutcracker doll among the presents, she suddenly finds herself caught up in an age-old battle before being transported to a magical world of sugar-frosted castles, chocolate kings, and true love. A classic among Christmas Books for Every Genre.
Historical Fiction

Mr. Dickens and His Carol by Samantha Silva
For Charles Dickens, each Christmas is been better than the last. His novels are literary blockbusters, avid fans litter the streets and he and his wife have five happy children and a sixth on the way. But when Dickens’ latest book, Martin Chuzzlewit, is a flop, the glorious life threatens to collapse around him. His publishers offer an ultimatum: either he writes a Christmas book in a month, or they will call in his debts, and he could lose everything. Grudgingly, and increasingly plagued by self-doubt, Dickens meets the muse he needs in Eleanor Lovejoy. If you love Dickens, choose this one among Christmas Books for Every Genre.

Last Christmas in Paris by Hazel Gaynor
August 1914. England is at war. As Evie Elliott watches her brother, Will, and his best friend, Thomas Harding, depart for the front, she believes—as everyone does—that it will be over by Christmas, when the trio plan to celebrate the holiday among the romantic cafes of Paris.
But as history tells us, it all happened so differently… If you want to travel to Paris, choose this one among Christmas Books for Every Genre.

Christmas Bells by Jennifer Chiaverini
Christmas Bells chronicles the events of 1863, when the peace and contentment of Longfellow’s family circle was suddenly, tragically broken, cutting even deeper than the privations of wartime. Through the pain of profound loss and hardship, Longfellow’s patriotism never failed, nor did the power of his language. “Christmas Bells,” the poem he wrote that holiday, lives on, spoken as verse and sung as a hymn. An interesting choice on Christmas Books for Every Genre list.
Mystery

A Maigret Christmas: And Other Stories by Georges Simenon
This collection brings together three of Simenon’s most enjoyable Christmas tales, newly translated, featuring Inspector Maigret and other characters from the Maigret novels. In ‘A Maigret Christmas’, the Inspector receives two unexpected visitors on Christmas Day, who lead him on the trail of a mysterious intruder dressed in red and white.
In ‘Seven Small Crosses in a Notebook’, the sound of alarms over Paris send the police on a cat and mouse chase across the city. And ‘The Little Restaurant in Les Ternes (A Christmas Story for Grown-Ups)’ tells of a cynical woman who is moved to an unexpected act of festive charity in a nightclub – one that surprises even her… A good choice on Christmas Books for Every Genre list.

Hercule Poirot’s Christmas by Agatha Christie
It is Christmas Eve. The Lee family reunion is shattered by a deafening crash of furniture, followed by a high-pitched wailing scream. Upstairs, the tyrannical Simeon Lee lies dead in a pool of blood, his throat slashed. But when Hercule Poirot, who is staying in the village with a friend for Christmas, offers to assist, he finds an atmosphere not of mourning but of mutual suspicion. It seems everyone had their own reason to hate the old man… An incredible classic among Christmas Books for Every Genre.

Silent Nights: Christmas Mysteries by Martin Edwards
The most memorable Christmas mysteries blend a lively storyline with an atmospheric evocation of the season. Getting the mixture right is much harder than it looks. This book introduces readers to some of the finest Christmas detective stories of the past. Martin Edwards’ selection blends festive pieces from much-loved authors with one or two stories which are likely to be unfamiliar even to diehard mystery fans. History / Biography

Christmas: A Biography by Judith Flanders
In Christmas: A Biography, acclaimed social historian and best-selling author Judith Flanders casts a sharp and revealing eye on the myths, legends and history of the season, from the origins of the holiday in the Roman empire to the emergence of Christmas trees in central Europe, to what might just possibly be the first appearance of Santa Claus – in Switzerland! – to draw a picture of the season as it has never been seen before.

The Man Who Invented Christmas by Les Standiford
As uplifting as the tale of Scrooge itself, this is the story of how Charles Dickens revived the signal holiday of the Western world. Soon to be a major motion picture.
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. Interesting nonfiction on the Christmas books for every genre list.

The True Saint Nicholas by William J. Bennett
The True Saint Nicholas: Why He Matters to Christmas focuses on three aspects of Saint Nicholas–historical facts from his life, his legacy in the centuries following his death, and the legendary status that transformed his likeness into the present-day jolly, toy-bearing Santa Claus. The book vividly captures the heart and so life of someone who lived long ago-and yet whose life remains an inspiration for everyone to aspire to a higher order of generosity, giving, and devotion to others. A heartwarming story on the Christmas books for every genre list.
